Description
The Baduy tribe, also known as the Sunda Badui, are an indigenous Sundanese group residing in the interior of Lebak Regency, Banten Province, numbering around 26,000. They live in seclusion to preserve their ancestral culture and avoid external influence.
The Baduy, or Urang Kanekes ('people of Kanekes'), inhabit a sacred territory in the Kendeng Mountain area of south Banten, Java. They restrict communication with the outside world to maintain their traditions and resist Islamisation.
They deliberately avoid technology, electricity, and modern footwear, and limit contact with foreigners. Locally, they are reputed to have supernatural powers, a reputation they actively uphold.
Their cultural background combines elements of Hinduism and Buddhism. According to local legends dating to the 16th century conquest of the Sundanese kingdom Padjajaran by Muslim forces, the Baduy retreated to the mountains to preserve their beliefs.
In 1931, Dr. Mulhenfeld of the Dutch colonial government prevented their forced relocation, recognizing that moving them would endanger their culture. Today, despite governmental integration efforts, the Baduy maintain their heritage by dividing society into two groups: the Inner Baduy and Outer Baduy.
The Inner Baduy live in three sacred villages called Taneh Larangan ('Forbidden Territory'). They follow strict taboos that prohibit technology except for knife blades and avoid outsiders to preserve community purity.
