Description
Explore Jakarta’s historical sites, including colonial-era buildings like the old city (Kota Tua), Intan Bridge (Diamond Bridge), and Sunda Kelapa harbor. Visit Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. The tour also includes the National Monument, symbolizing Indonesia’s independence.
The Old Town, also called Old Batavia, covers 1.3 square kilometers in North and West Jakarta. It features City Hall, formerly the Governor General’s office of the VOC, now home to the Jakarta History Museum.
Old Jakarta was a major Asian trade center in the 16th century due to its strategic location and resources. Sunda Kelapa harbor, located at the Ciliwung River estuary in North Jakarta, was the main port of the Sunda Kingdom. Today, it serves traditional wooden sailing ships called pinisi, integral to regional island freight.
The Kota Intan Bridge is Indonesia’s oldest bridge, built in 1628 by the Dutch East India Company. This hanging bridge once functioned as a bascule bridge, lifting to allow marine traffic.
The Jakarta Cathedral, officially Gereja Santa Maria Diangkat ke Surga, serves as the Roman Catholic archbishop’s seat. It was originally named De Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming in Dutch.
Istiqlal Mosque, opened in 1978, is named after the Arabic word for independence. It ranks as the ninth largest mosque worldwide by worshipper capacity and stands near Merdeka Square, Jakarta Cathedral, and Immanuel Church.
The final stop includes a visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), where traditional houses from across Indonesia are exhibited.
