Description
Departing early from Jakarta, travel 52 kilometers to Bogor, known as the 'Rain City.' Begin with a visit to Bogor Botanical Gardens, established in 1874 and originally part of the Samida artificial forest during King Siliwangi’s reign. The gardens cover 87 hectares and house 15,000 plant species, including 400 types of palms and over 5,000 orchid varieties from Indonesia. Many trees here are centuries old, surrounded by streams and lotus ponds.
Next, visit a local batik workshop near the gardens. Learn about batik’s cultural significance and create your own batik piece to take home.
Then tour a factory operating since 1963 where you can watch traditional Wayang Golek puppet makers at work and try painting and assembling your own wooden puppet, an Indonesian art form featuring unique shapes and characters.
Finally, visit the Bogor Gong Factory, a 200-year-old establishment that supplies gongs for traditional gamelan orchestras. See craftsmen from the seventh generation practicing ancestral metalworking skills as they create gongs by hand using leather and white iron.
