Description
Gunung Padang is located in Karyamukti, Campaka, West Java, about 30 kilometres southwest of the regency seat and 8 kilometres from Lampegan station. The site sits at 885 metres above sea level on a hill formed by an extinct volcano with five terraces bordered by stone retaining walls. Access is via 370 andesite stone steps rising 95 metres. The site is covered with large hexagonal volcanic stone columns.
The Sundanese people consider Gunung Padang sacred, believing it was created overnight by King Siliwangi as a palace.
Geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja has suggested the site is a giant pyramid built 9,000 to 20,000 years ago, indicating an advanced prehistoric civilization. However, other experts, including vulcanologist Sutikno Bronto, argue it is a natural volcanic neck rather than an artificial pyramid.
In October 2023, Natawidjaja and colleagues published a paper claiming Gunung Padang is the world's oldest pyramid, dating back 27,000 years. This paper was retracted in March 2024 by the publisher, stating the dating was based on soil samples unrelated to human artifacts, invalidating the pyramid claims.
