Description

The traditional batik-making process is a meticulous art that requires patience, creativity, and precision. It begins with a piece of high-quality cotton or silk fabric, where the artisan sketches the desired pattern. Using a special tool called a canting, hot melted wax is carefully applied to the fabric to protect selected areas from absorbing dye. For larger or repetitive patterns, artisans may use copper stamps known as cap. After the wax is applied, the fabric is immersed in dye. The wax-covered sections resist the color, creating beautiful contrasts. To produce multiple colors, the process of waxing and dyeing is repeated several times. Once the desired design is complete, the wax is removed by boiling the fabric, revealing the intricate motifs beneath The Pottery Class at the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics (Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik) in Jakarta offers a fun and creative hands-on experience where visitors can learn the basics of ceramic making while exploring Indonesia's artistic heritage. Located in the heart of Kota Tua (Old Town), the museum combines history, art, and interactive learning, making it an ideal activity for families, students, and travelers During the class, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of pottery using natural clay. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they learn shaping techniques such as hand-building and, depending on availability, using a traditional pottery wheel. Visitors are encouraged to create their own unique pieces, including cups, bowls, vases, or decorative ornaments, regardless of their previous experience
