Highlights

  • Taste traditional Javanese herbal elixirs (Jamu)
  • Explore ancient Indonesian shadow puppet culture (Wayang)

Description

Your experience begins with pickup from your hotel or a convenient location by an English-speaking guide and licensed driver. You will first visit the Jakarta Textile Museum to learn and participate in the Batik making process.

Batik is a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique practiced in Java since the 14th century. You will receive a handkerchief-sized cloth to design and apply hot wax using a traditional tool called a canting. Your guide and instructor will assist you throughout the process.

After waxing, you will select a base color for dyeing. The instructor will dye, dry, and remove the wax from your cloth, allowing you to take home your custom Batik piece as a souvenir. While the fabric dries, your guide will show you valuable Batik and Indonesian textile collections within the museum.

Note: The Textile Museum is closed on Mondays. On this day, a different Batik experience at another venue is provided.

Next, you will visit Batavia Old Town to explore the Indonesian puppet studio, a UNESCO World Heritage site known as Wayang. The guide will explain and demonstrate the shadow puppet-making process. Occasionally, live performances may be available.

Nearby, you can taste one of two Jamu herbal elixirs: the energizing Turmeric Tamarind or the relaxing Aromatic Ginger.

The tour concludes with a brief historical walk through Batavia Old Town, with opportunities for a break or meal at your own expense before returning to your hotel or preferred drop-off point.
